Cornelia Spitzer (Vice-Chair)

In her role as Vice-Chair, Cornelia Spitzer has been a member of the ENSI Board since 1 November 2020. Until her retirement at the end of September 2020, she held the post of Technical Project Manager, Division of Nuclear Installation Safety in the Department of Nuclear Safety and Security at the International Atomic Energy Agency Energy Agency (IAEA). From 2015 to 2020, she headed the Safety Assessment Section of this division.

Prior to that, Cornelia Spitzer worked in the expert organisation for the nuclear approval and regulatory process in the German Federal State of Baden-Württemberg, where in 2014 she advised the Executive Board on the sales policy and strategic orientation towards the provision of international technical services. From 2010 to 2013, she led the overall Plant Behaviour Department (divided into the Thermal and Fluid Dynamics, Nuclear Design and Nuclear Physics, Reliability Analysis and Risk Management Departments), participated in national safety reviews and the EU stress test, and conducted international independent reviews, including for nuclear installations in South Korea. From 1998 to 2009, Cornelia Spitzer led the Department of Reliability Analysis and Risk Management.

After completing her degree in mathematics with a minor in physics at Heidelberg University, she began her professional career as an authorised expert in 1981. She acquired expertise and gained many years of experience in technical, organisational and regulatory nuclear topics, organised specialist national and international events, and was, up until her retirement, a member of national and international committees (for, among other things, the drafting of rules and guidelines).
